Top 5 Camping Destinations In Colorado

When it comes to beautiful scenery, majestic mountains, and incredible outdoor destinations, few states compare to Colorado!  Weather its breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains or rocky spires of Garden of the Gods, there is much to see and do, it’s hard to narrow it down to the five best.  But we’ll do our best.  If you’re headed to Colorado and looking for a place to pitch your tent under the stars, here are our best recommendations.

Maroon Bells

With its 14,000-foot mountain peaks, crystal clear lakes, and epic vistas, the Maroon Bells are without a doubt one of the best camping destinations for backpackers, hikers, and even car campers that want to take the family out for the weekend.  Great spots to pitch a tent are the Silver Bar, Silver Bell, or Silver Queen campsites.  But honestly, no matter where you settle down, you can’t go wrong.

Piñon Flats Campground

If you’re looking to get away from the traditional pine covered mountains, Piñon Flats Campground in the Great Sand Dunes National Park is a fun destination in the southern part of the state.  You might think you’re in the Sahara Dessert instead of Colorado, because of the endless sand dunes.  There are tons of trails and hikes in the area, and if you’re up for a real adrenaline rush, try sandboarding down the dunes!

Guanella Pass

The greatest think about this location is it’s just an hour’s drive from Denver, so it’s easy to access.  It’s found in the Pike National Forest, and sits at about 11,670 feet.  It’s known for it’s spectacular views of the night sky because you’re away from all the light pollution of the city and up so high in the mountains.  So, if you’re a stargazer… this could be the ideal location for you.

Oh Be Joyful Campground

The name fits the location because the scenery here is literally the most beautiful you’ll find anywhere on earth.  The lush greens, the towering peaks, the picturesque lakes and rivers… it’s incredible.  The campsite is located just at the edge of the Raggeds Wilderness, which spans over 65,000 acres, and is a fisherman’s, mountain biker’s, and camper’s dream playground.

Angel of Shavano Campgrounds

There are only 20 campsites at this location inside the San Isabel National Forest, so it’s never overcrowded, and always feels like it’s just you and mother nature.  One reason it doesn’t attract the crowds is because it is a 3-hour drive from Denver, but trust us when we say the drive is worth it.  Angel of Shavnao can’t be beat for amazing hiking, mountain biking, and fishing in the North Fork Reservoir.

So, what’s holding you back?

If you’re in Colorado, it’s time to get out and see your beautiful state.  If you’re not in Colorado, we think it’s time to make some plans.  But, when you plan your trip, make sure you have all the camping gear you’ll need for a safe and comfortable trip.  You can get all the best gear at!
